Seattle Shakespeare Company
“We believe that by giving students fun, positive experiences with Shakespeare's texts at an earlier age, we have the possibility of altering the entire secondary education experience for many of those students who would—without self confidence gained through such an experience—otherwise be "lost" during the Junior High years.” Stephanie Shine, Artistic Director, Seattle Shakespeare Company

Founded in 1994, Seattle Shakespeare Company's Education Program gives young learners meaningful encounters with classical texts, not only exposing them to great thoughts but also showing them what humanity is capable of: rich language, deep emotions, staggering intelligence and clever wit. SSC believes we all have these abilities and that when children gain access to these great words and learn to speak the texts, their own cognitive powers increase.

SSC ' s Education Program consists of the following:

Student Matinees: Last year, Seattle Shakespeare Company's Student Matinees reached nearly 3,000 young people, many of whom had never seen a play before. The direct, almost visceral contact with actors afforded by our intimate playing space challenges students to become more involved in the theatre experience, and our study guide and pre-show interactive workshop (taught by an SSC actor) gives students the tools they need to be confident audience members.

Camp Bill: In this week-long introduction to Shakespeare's world from an actor's point of view, campers aged 9 to 16 tackle scenes and soliloquies, learn stage combat, perform period dance and movement and generally learn Shakespeare from the inside out.

Short Shakes: SSC's newest education program, Short Shakes offers young actors and veterans of Camp Bill a chance to test their abilities on stage. Under the direction of an SSC company member, the Short Shakes Company performs abridged versions of the current season’s plays in the theater and on the same sets as professional actors.

Outreach Programs: SSC takes Shakespeare into schools and libraries with workshops and short performances. These programs include workshops/residencies taught by SSC actors and a Continuing Education Series for educators seeking innovative ways to teach Shakespeare.
