Economic Impact Studies

The arts are big business in our region. Together the activity of nonprofit arts organizations and their patrons in King and Pierce Counties alone generates more than $1 billion in the state's economy creating 28,626 jobs, $465 million in labor income and $39 million in taxes.

With a night out on the town, patrons support restaurants, retails stores and hotels, among hundreds of other businesses. The arts also keep our urban communities alive and welcoming on evenings and weekends. In total, King and Pierce County arts and heritage organizations offer a total of some 13,000 performances or exhibits per year. That’s an average of 36 events per day for us to choose from. The annual audience for these events is 7.6 million.

ArtsFund conducts economic impact studies at about five-year intervals. The last study, funded in major part by a generous grant by the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, was released in November 2004. ArtsFund is currently seeking funding in the approximate amount of $150,000 for the next study, to be released in 2009.
